Teaching Quality Standard
The TQS in Practice
In my professional practice as a teacher, I strive to always better myself while always meeting or exceeding the standards in the TQS.
Below are they ways I meet these standards in my every day practice, and areas I seek to improve upon.
Fostering Effective Relationships
Across my practice, I have quickly been able to build relationships with my students. I connect with them over similarities, their interests, or sports. I make sure every student feels supported, valued, and part of a class community. If there is ever a breakdown in the teacher-student relationship, I speak with the student and school supports to move forward and repair the relationship and trust.
Establishing Inclusive Learning Environments
My degree and many of my practicum experiences focused on inclusive education. I am well versed in UDL, IPP's, Psychoeducational assessments, I read often on best-practices for students, and help any and all my students to access strategies within a caring, inclusive classroom. I seek to be there for my students and to offer them as many strategies as they need to achieve success.
Engaging in Career-Long Learning
Attending or seeking out Professional Development courses/opportunities is a part of my everyday life as a teacher and coach. I recently attended the AISCA New Teachers Workshop (2024) and have taken many NCCP courses for coaching. I am a life-long learner, personally and professionally, which means I am always looking for new opportunities, whether they are live or pre-recorded.
Applying Foundational Knowledge About FNMI
I will be honest and admit that this is the TQS area I am working most heavily on, however I am surrounded daily by outstanding teachers who seek to honour traditional knowledge, ways of being, and to bring Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into the classroom. I want to be authentic and honour the many cultures that are the focus of this TQS when I teach, and have seen (and started using) many methods to do this within the classroom.
Demonstrating a Professional Body of Knowledge
I read research on teaching and education as often as I can to learn about new ideas and information on best practices. I ask for and take feedback and advice from other more experienced teachers, and try to implement as many research-based teaching techniques as possible. I want my students to not only feel supported, but to be supported behind the scenes with the best best teaching they can.
Adhering to Legal Frameworks and Policies
Across my teaching journey (be it in practicums, in guest teaching, or as a teacher intern) I have always adhered to the legal frameworks and the policies of the places I have worked; whether it is a confidentiality agreement, knowing the legal implications of my actions and my legal responsibilities (during active supervision for example), or knowing and referring to policies when required, I hold this TQS up to a high standard.
